Finding God in the Streets: Anthony Freeman’s Journey of Faith and Redemption
For Anthony Freeman, the streets of Atlanta are more than a backdrop to his struggles—they are the place where he rediscovered his faith. In a world that can be harsh and unforgiving, especially for someone who’s homeless, Anthony found peace and purpose through a renewed relationship with God. His story is one of redemption, a testament to the power of faith in transforming even the most difficult circumstances.
Anthony’s life, like many others who experience homelessness, has been filled with loss, hardship, and difficult choices. He grew up in Atlanta and, as a young man, found himself caught up in the wrong path. “When I came out of high school, I was supposed to go to the military,” Anthony recalled. “But instead, I chose to sell drugs. My father was involved, and they wanted me to be a part of the family business.”
That decision led him down a dark road, culminating in a tragic incident that landed him in prison for 17 years. During that time, Anthony’s mother passed away, and he was left to grapple with his choices and the profound grief that followed.
“When I got out, I had nowhere to go. No family, no home,” Anthony said. Homelessness became his reality. But it was in this period of isolation, where many would lose hope, that Anthony’s faith began to take root again. “I just finally submitted myself to God and asked Him to do for me what I couldn’t do for myself. I said, ‘I’m asking for help, Lord. I need you to heal me.’”
For Anthony, faith wasn’t an overnight fix to his problems, but a process—a journey that required patience and trust. A chance encounter with a woman who took him to church marked the beginning of his spiritual awakening. From that point on, he dedicated his life to following God’s plan. “I told God, ‘Wherever you want me to go, I’ll go. Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do.’”
Redemption Amidst Hardship
Anthony’s story is a powerful reminder that redemption is always possible, no matter how far you’ve fallen. His faith gave him the strength to keep going, even when life felt overwhelming. “People don’t know what Jesus has planned for them,” Anthony said. “They just look at the circumstances, but God’s way is not our way. You have to wait on God.”
In a society that often views homelessness as a result of bad decisions or moral failings, Anthony’s story stands as a testament to the idea that everyone deserves a second chance. His faith has become his anchor, providing him with hope and a sense of direction. “I don’t care how it looks now, because people don’t know what God has planned.”
Anthony’s words echo a larger truth: Faith doesn’t always change the outside circumstances immediately, but it can change how you navigate through them. Living on the streets, facing hunger, and not knowing what the next day will bring—these are the challenges that Anthony faces every day. But his belief in God has given him the courage to keep moving forward, trusting that his life has purpose beyond the struggles of the present moment.
A Broader Reflection on Faith in Urban Communities
Anthony’s story is not unique. Across urban areas like Atlanta, countless individuals who experience homelessness find themselves rediscovering their faith in the midst of hardship. Whether it’s the solitude of life on the streets or the loss of material possessions, many turn to spirituality as a means of survival, finding strength in something larger than themselves.
This connection between faith and survival speaks to a deeper truth: Often, it is in the most difficult moments that we are forced to confront what truly matters. For Anthony, it was losing everything that made him realize he couldn’t rely on himself alone. His faith filled the gaps where family, friends, and society had failed.
“God won’t leave you,” Anthony said. “He’s always there, even when you think you’re alone.”
Redemption for All
Anthony’s journey is a powerful illustration of the redemptive potential of faith, not just for those experiencing homelessness, but for anyone who has made mistakes or feels lost in life. His story serves as a reminder that, while we cannot always control our circumstances, we can control how we respond to them. And sometimes, it takes hitting rock bottom to truly turn to faith and allow it to guide us to something better.
“I’ve been out here for four months,” Anthony said, “and you know what? I haven’t gone hungry. That’s a blessing. God provides.”
At “Not For Sale,” we believe that stories like Anthony’s are critical to understanding the humanity of those experiencing homelessness. It’s easy to make assumptions about why someone is on the streets, but every person has a story—a path that led them there. And for many, like Anthony, that path eventually leads them back to faith, to a belief that there is a plan for their life, even when it feels impossible to see.
Faith as a Path Forward
Anthony’s journey reminds us that redemption is always possible. His story, rooted in faith, shows how even the darkest moments can be transformed through trust in a higher power. As he says, “It may look bad now, but don’t think that’s the end of the story. It’s just the beginning.”
For those of us looking from the outside in, Anthony’s story serves as a call to action. It’s not just about understanding faith, but about recognizing the potential for change and growth in every person we encounter. If Anthony can find God in the streets, perhaps we can find it in our hearts to offer the empathy, compassion, and support needed to help those like him find their way back to a better life.
